Mickelson Trail This trail runs the length of South Dakota's Black Hills. The 114-mile route passes through rugged granite formations and stands of pine, spruce and aspen. Used by hikers, bikers and horseback riders, the Mickelson Trail follows the abandoned Burlington Northern rail line. The Lewis and Clark Lake sprawls for more than 30 miles, totaling over 33,000 acres of water. The recreation area also is popular camping site with 390 campsites and cabins. Roy Lake boasts 95 campsites. Black Hills National Forest has 28 developed campgrounds with more than 700 sites. The State Game Lodge served as President Calvin Coolidge's summer White House. Blue Bell Lodge has a Western dude-ranch theme. Sylvan Lake and Legion Lake resorts overlook sparkling mountain lakes. The park also has seven campgrounds. Visitors can also climb Harney Peak, the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains.
