South Dakota State Parks

Custer State Park
The largest of South Dakota's parks, Custer covers 73,000 acres in the Black Hills. The park's landscape range from open grasslands and low foothills to craggy granite spires and mountain peaks. The park is home to 1,500 bison. For information call: (605)255-4515

Fort Sisseston
Established in 1864, stands as a testament to South Dakota's past. Fourteen of its original buildings have weathered the test of time. It has been called one of the best preserved forts in the country. For information call: (605)448-5701

George S. Mickelson Trail
This trail runs the length of South Dakota's Black Hills. The 114-mile route passes through rugged granite formations and stands of pine, spruce and aspen. Used by hikers, bikers and horseback riders, the Mickelson Trail follows the abandoned Burlington Northern rail line. For information call: (605)773-3391

Lewis and Clark Recreation Area
Just west of Yankton, is a boating and sailing paradise. The Lewis and Clark Lake sprawls for more than 30 miles, totaling over 33,000 acres of water. The recreation area also is popular camping site with 390 campsites and cabins. For information call: (605)668-2985

Roy Lake State Park
Located on a 2,000-acre glacial lake in northeast South Dakota, provides great fishing, hunting and water recreation. Roy Lake boasts 95 campsites. For information call: (605)448-5701

Farm Island Recreation Area
4 miles east of Pierre, is nestled along the shores of the Missouri River and provides a great place for fishermen and boaters to rest their heads after a fun-filled day on the water. For information call: (605)224-5605

Black Hills National Forest
Covers an area approximately 125 miles long and 65 miles wide. Black Hills National Forest has 28 developed campgrounds with more than 700 sites. For information call: (605)673-2251

Custer State Park
This park has four lodges-each with a distinct personality. The State Game Lodge served as President Calvin Coolidge's summer White House. Blue Bell Lodge has a Western dude-ranch theme. Sylvan Lake and Legion Lake resorts overlook sparkling mountain lakes. The park also has seven campgrounds. Visitors can also climb Harney Peak, the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains. Badlands National Park
The perfect location for the outdoor lover. Eight trails cross through Badlands National Park and allow hikers to see native prairie grasses, wildflowers, Badlands formations, fossils and wildlife. The park has two campgrounds. For information call: (605)433-5361
