Effigy Mounds National Monument
The Monument contains 1,481 acres with 200 mounds, 29 effigies, the others are conical, linear and compound. Eastern Woodland Indian culture built these mounds from about 500 BC to 1300 AD. We are open daily throughout the year 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with extended hours to 6:00 pm June to September and weekends in October. For information call: (319)873-3491

Herbert Hoover National Historical Site
The birthplace, Friends Meetinghouse, and boyhood neighborhood of the 31st President, the grave site of President and Mrs. Hoover, and the Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. The Historic Site is open daily, 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. For information call: (319)643-2541

Amana Colonies National Historic Landmark
The people of the Amanas, founded by a religious group from Germany, farmed in the European fashion-living in the village and going out to the fields to work, rather than living on separate farms. For information call: (800)245-5465

The Fort Museum and Frontier Village
9-6 daily, May through mid-Oct. 1862 military fort and frontier town with 12 original and replica buildings. Museum displays American Indian, pioneer and military artifacts. Relive the area's history at Frontier Days in early June, at the Labor Day weekend Civil War reenactment and during Oktoberfest. For information call: (515)573-4231

Pikes Peak State Park
It is the highest bluff on the Mississippi River. Activities: picnicking, 77 campsites with 60 electrical sites, modern shower and restroom facilities and a trailer dump station, hiking and bicycling. For information call: (319)873-2341

Buffalo Bill Cody Homestead
9-5 daily, April-October One of the homesteads of the Cody family, built of stone in 1847 by Buffalo Bill's father. View restored home, stagecoach and buffalo. For information call: (319)225-2981

Buffalo Bill Museum/The Lone Star Steamer
9-5 Mon.-Sat., Noon-5 Sun., May 15-October 15; 9-5 Sat., Noon-5 Sun., October 16-May 14. Memorial and tribute to native son William F. Buffalo Bill Cody, as well as a museum of steamboat and pioneer history. Wooden-hull sternwheeler, a national historic landmark, is on display with a model of the black box used on airplanes, which was invented by an Iowan. For information call: (319)289-5580

Blank Park Zoo
10-5 daily, May 1-October 15. Beautifully landscaped 22-acre zoological park, featuring naturalistic exhibits with more than 800 animals from five continents. Train ride, camel rides, gift shop and snack bar. For information call: (515)285-4722

National Balloon Museum
9-4 Mon.-Fri., 10-4 Sat., 1-4 Sun.; closed some holidays. Contemporary building of unusual design houses a collection of ballooning artifacts and memorabilia depicting the history of hot-air and gas ballooning, ballooning events and personalities. For information call: (515)961-3714
