September 17-25, Birmingham Oktoberfest-Street Festival
The 23rd annual celebration of German culture sponsored by FDSK, Birmingham's German club, features German music, dancing, food, imported and domestic beverages and a gift shop laden with items from the alpine countries. September 18, 12th annual alabama Coastal Cleanup
For the past 11 years, alabamians have put on their visors, slapped on sun screen and headed to their favorite area to make a difference in alabama's coastal environment. During the coastal cleanup, set for September 18 in Baldwin and Mobile counties, volunteers pick up beach trash and record information about the debris found. This cleanup not only rids the coast of unsightly garbage, it also contributes to an international effort to help shape coastal legislation and educate people on the problems associated with marine debris. Marine debris is comprised of everything from plastics to human waste. Each year, thousands of marine mammals, sea birds, and turtles are killed when they become entangled in debris. Others die when they eat plastic or styrofoam which can become lodged in their throats and cause starvation. Marine debris also damages fishing nets, fouls propellers, and clogs water intakes. Last year, more than 3,200 volunteers participated in the cleanup effort which is held each year in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup sponsored by the Center for Marine Conservation. Following the cleanup, participants are invited to relax and enjoy special activities at the Gulf State Park and Cadillac Square on Dauphin Island, as well as other locations. October 21-23, 16th annual Covered Bridge Festival
Four-day festival highlighting the covered bridges with fall color tours and arts and crafts in the park on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Festival begins with a golf tournament on Thursday ; street dance and queen's ball on Friday and a country music concert on Saturday night. Entertainment will be provided by Neal McCoy with Billy Joe Royal as the opening act.
